90% Foreigners In Sabah Employed While Locals Remain Jobless: Marsidi

Lacking Self-Confidence

Yes. That's the Daily Express headline today, Sunday 4th December 2005. The Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Marsidi Manjun painted a dismal picture of Sabahans, saying they are not ready to either face or accept globalization.

"I am saying this realistically because I have noted that our people (Sabahans) have no self-confidence, have no resilience to compete in the business world and our people have no capital or lack money to start their own businesses that could enable them to compete with other races and nationalities. Not only that, our people are actually aware of the existing opportunities and assistance in our state but they don't use them for their own benefit. In addition, when our people have skills, some would not use them to succeed or improve their lives, " he said.

"Those successful bumiputeras in business are not actually locals but are those who once came from Indonesia and became locals here. I have to say sincerely that I salute these people for their commitment and diligence in grabbing any business opportunities job vacancies that are not taken up by the locals. This is what we should observe; complacency, ignorance and carelessness have caused our own people (Sabahans) to lose the vast opportunities in business and employment sectors in the state which may affect our readiness to face the impact of globalization," he said.

Marsidi reminded that there are many locals who are jobless when 90 percent of foreigners in the state are employed. He said that we can observe this most apparent situation at tamus around the state.

"You can see there are many small-time tamu traders among the Indonesian and Filipinos who sell a variety of goods compared to several or few locals who have to compete with them. This scenario is part of the globalization impact on our state as there is an easy path for the outsiders from other countries to come and enjoy our opportunities and chances especially in doing business here," he said.

  • Meaning to say, out of 10 foreigners, 9 are employed. Waa! Ramai tu!

    1. ya betullll .... problem dia dalam bidang construction majority sudah orang luar

napa gomen ndak mau introduce labor unions (macam di US) dan jugak minimum wage?

mentality locals pun kena ubah jugak, kalau ko tengok do Boston, Massc. US (construction city of US) majority perkerja jad labour ni adalah orang mereka sendiri pasal ada unions yang kuat mau protect hak2 itu ini.

Ni PTI or PDI semua even kerja buruh di Sabah actually hak2 diorang ndak terjamin, ada yang kena tipu pasal gaji etc, dah tu tempat tingggal diorang tu bawah paras tempat tinggal utk manusia, air ndada etc etc .. tapi diorang sanggup habis di tempat asal diorang lagi la teruk

    2. tambah lagi soal bumiputra Sabah tu yang Masidi bilang mostly because leaders bertelingkah sesama sendiri, dah tu tulung2 kroni/nepotism ....

di sjung jugak ada isu ni

in the end aku rasa ndada sesiapa bulih tulung tapi diri sendiri jugak, for our generation yang at least ada kesedaran (pasal ada sekolah/kolej/U) should learn to stand for ourself.
